May Renovation Update

Much has been happening over the past several weeks. The architects have completed 100% of the drawings and have submitted them to the city for permit review. Our general contractor, Johnson-Kreis, has provided copies of the plans to potential sub-contractors, and bids will be received on May 12th. The start of construction is scheduled for May 18th with the first step being removal of flooring in the area of Phase I work by an asbestos abatement company. Johnson-Kreis is scheduled to begin their work on June 1st. Phase I will take about 9 months, and we should be able to occupy the completed portion of our new children’s space in mid-March 2021! We’ll also gain three new adult classrooms on the third floor during this initial phase. Phase II work on the west side of the building will follow in April 2021. During Phase II, the remaining children’s rooms and the new music office space will be under construction. The entire project should be completed by November 2021 which is earlier than originally projected.

A small team of staff and volunteers has been preparing the space for construction. The classrooms in the area of Phase I renovation have been emptied of all furnishings and supplies. Music ministry resources are being relocated in advance of their move to temporary space on the third floor in early May. The transition/relocation plan for Sunday School and Wednesday nights has been completed. When we are able to return to the building for Bible study and other activity, we’ll be in our new or temporary spaces.

Challenging times like these are not unprecedented in FBC’s history. There is no mention in our history books of the 1918 global pandemic, and perhaps it was just overshadowed by WWI. Our history does record that more than 100 years ago, during a time of global pandemic and world war, FBC was concentrating on discipling children, supporting missions, serving the community and preparing for a building program. As we look forward to exciting times in the future, we know that God has richly blessed us throughout many Generations. We trust that He has great things in store for us as we continue to serve Him.
